THEME
Star Wars: The Brak Sector takes place in the most turbulent part of the
"period of civil war," immediately around and following the Battle of Yavin and
the events of the first movie. However, rather than try to encompass an entire
galaxy or reenact the movies, this game focuses on just one sector of the
Star Wars galaxy: Brak sector.
Located on the outer edge of the Expansion Region of the galaxy, Brak sector is
about 20 light years away from the Corellian Run on the Slice. Astrographically
speaking, the sector is just a sidestep from important Imperial military and
trade lanes. Brak sector officially contains 67 inhabited and over 350
uninhabited star systems, but small colonies and other unofficial operations
bring the number of inhabited systems to around 90.
The sector was originally settled as a mining sector by the Lant Mining
Corporation, a major supplier of metals and minerals for the Empire's war
industries that has contracts with many military contractors, including Sienar
Fleet Systems, Kuat Drive Yards, and Merr-Sonn Munitions. Though it continues
to be the economic heart of the sector, Lant has been experiencing a shortage
of mineral resources and begun suffering through an economic crisis that has
hurt the entire sector, starting with Demar, LMC's corporate world.
Despite the current recession, the Galactic Empire has taken an interest
in the resources and strategic location of the sector, and has begun
establishing the sector as an Imperial fleet staging point, staffing it with
higher-than-average concentrations of ships and troops not only for local
sector patrol but also for neighboring and outlying sectors.
The Empire possesses thirty Star Destroyers within the sector, as well as
thousands of supporting ships, not to mention the spacedocks under construction
in orbit around Bacrana, the sector capital.
The orbital spacedocks, especially, will be crucial to Imperial control
of the sector, since they will be capable of extensive repairs to the
largest capital vessels and even constructing new vessels. At this time,
they are nearly, but not yet fully, operational.
The Imperials exert less control on some of the more removed parts of the
sector, such as the crimeworld of Genesia, whose corrupt democracy is virtually
controlled by two rival crime factions. The Nalmar Crime Family is the more
powerful of the two, currently led by the near-human Eelien Kirat, but Soach's
Organization, controlled by Soach the Twi'lek, is backed by support from Jabba
the Hutt, no trifling person to oppose. The Nalmar control of the smuggling
industry is as undisputed as Soach's ownership of black marketeering -- except
by the crimelords themselves, whose on-again, off-again gang war has rendered
Genesia unstable.
Most of the sector is human-controlled, save for one small cluster of systems
not far from the sector core. This, the Aramand Cluster, is home to four-armed
natives known as the Aramandi. After being introduced to the technologies of
the Republic, the Aramandi are a modern group, though they still disdain
repulsorlift and use groundcars. The Empire has restricted all entry into the
Aramand Cluster, letting the Aramandi rule themselves with a minimal Imperial
prescence. However, LMC is rapidly running out of mineral reserves and is
petitioning to open the Cluster up to mining, meeting with solid resistance
from the Aramandi. Thus far, the Empire has denied the requests, not wishing to
cause trouble with the Aramandi, but as LMC dwindles into depression, something
is sure to give way in the Cluster.
Rounding out the sector, a mysterious bureau is rumored to exist, known as
InfoServices, eagerly sought after by bounty hunters and others for its ability
to obtain almost any information -- for a price.
And of course, somewhere, the Rebel Alliance waits for its chance to strike,
but in view of the opposing odds, the group has remained hidden, emerging only
occasionally to stage short-range attacks against the Empire and its corporate
ally.
This setting is based on the roleplaying game sourcebook,
"Flashpoint! Brak Sector," by Sterling Hershey, published by West End Games.
